Call the Local News for Fraud Help. Scam Victims Turn to an Alternative Resource for Results.

Local News Station

When the usual resources don’t satisfy a consumer in trouble, the smart move might be to call local news for fraud help. The fact is, for many scam victims, the wheels of justice too often move too slowly. Sometimes, it seems the wheel is stuck and won’t move at all.

It’s frustrating for victims of scams and fraud who have taken what they believe are the right steps and reached out to the right people to resolve their problems. Sadly, sometimes the resources they turn to for help just don’t move as fast as they could…or should.

But now, many scam victims in a no-win situation these days turn to an unexpected and “unofficial” resource for help—their local news station.

For fraud help, a last (but powerful) resort. Call the local news station.

No scam-prevention or crime-fighting expert would say that your first call for help would be to reach out to a TV station. For sure, scam victims should always take the most logical steps to report a crime or a potential crime, such as contacting their local police or the FTC.

Are you a scam victim? Here’s where to report each type of scam.

But what happens when a victim simply finds themselves at a dead end? The fact is, no one cares as much about victims who have been scammed as the victims themselves. And while most organizations and companies say they will do all they can to protect the public from scams, oftentimes they come up painfully short. That’s when desperate scam victims turn to a source they feel they can trust, and hope can help.

Real-life scam drama: 90-year-old loses his life savings.

That was the case with Irving Rosenberg of Southern California. The 90-year-old had discovered in early 2026 that, since April of 2025, someone had been quietly and boldly withdrawing all of Irving’s money from his savings account with Wells Fargo Bank. How much? $814,000.

“It took all my life savings,” Rosenberg said. “I was angry and frustrated. I was hurt.” Rosenberg said he never wrote checks from his savings accounts and never asked anyone to withdraw money for him.

Time to call in the family,

Thankfully, Rosenberg had a relative who stepped in to help give him another voice in the matter. With the help of his nephew, David Satin, he contacted the bank and filed a fraud claim. At the time, the Bank said it would “launch an investigation,” but told Rosenberg that it could take a long time to resolve. “An investigation could take forever,” Rosenberg thought to himself.

Satin, after doing his own investigation, quickly noticed that the signatures on the checks were clearly fake and not in his uncle’s hand. “They were obviously forged. It wasn’t even close.” Not only that, Satin explained, he wondered why Wells Fargo, on their own, didn’t flag any of these large and unusual withdrawals.

Little help from the bank.

Soon after, Rosenberg received a letter from Wells Fargo about the investigation, and it wasn’t good news.  The bank denied his fraud claim and seemed to blame Rosenberg for not notifying it sooner. The response from the bank said in part:

…we cannot reimburse you because too much time has passed before you contacted us about this fraud. We would like to inform you that the claim was denied due to untimely notification. …We agree with the decision of the claim [response].

Satin, the nephew, felt that was a cold and heartless response from Wells Fargo. He feels they need to take into account the reality of the abilities and limitations of their senior citizen customers:

  • They may suffer from memory loss and dementia
  • Older people are not digital natives and often don’t track their accounts online.
  • Scammers are known to prey on elderly citizens.

More than that, if you take a logical step back and think about it, how can Wells Fargo so easily wash their hands of the matter?

  • Rosenberg didn’t write any of the several checks against the account—turns out they were forged.
  • The bank did not become suspicious that the account was emptied of more than $800,000 so quickly, given there had been no record of ongoing withdrawals.
  • Rosenberg trusted Wells Fargo to protect his money and did nothing overtly wrong to cause the crime.

Time to call the local news: 7 On Your Side.

Satin reached out to a local Southern California news station, KABC. They are one of the most-watched news stations in the greater Los Angeles area. More than that. It features an important segment called “7 On Your Side,” a special consumer advocacy and investigative reporting unit. Satin was aware that they often helped consumers who had been scammed, faced other dilemmas, or had been let down by the system.

The 7 On Your Side team has a proven reputation for helping consumers in a bind, often successfully resolving disputes, fighting scams, or recovering lost money…after failing to get any results on their own.

When they heard about Irving Rosenberg’s lost life savings, it didn’t take long for 7 On Your Side to get involved…and get results. After they contacted Wells Fargo on Rosenberg’s behalf, things began to move quickly. In a news segment, Satin told ABC 7 reporter Carlos Granda that Wells Fargo had suddenly become more active.

“After I contacted you and you contacted them, they (Wells Fargo) contacted me at least five times. They are absolutely more responsive.” However, Satin still wasn’t getting his hopes up for his uncle.

“Do I have a lot of confidence that he’s going to see any money? I don’t know.”

The bank returns the $814,000.

But on an early February 2026 broadcast, reporter Granda had amazing news to report just weeks after the watchdog unit had gotten involved.

“As we were putting the story together, we got good news,” he said in a televised segment. “Wells Fargo sending us and email, and contacting the family, that they were going to approve this claim.”

In other words, Wells Fargo was saying they were returning Irving Rosenberg’s $814,000 to his account. Here’s what they said:

“After working with our customer and their designated Power of Attorney, and reviewing additional information, we are pleased to share that we are returning Mr. Rosenberg’s money to his account. Fraud prevention remains a top priority, and we encourage all customers to review their statements monthly and report anything suspicious right away so we can act quickly to protect them.”

Interestingly enough, there was no mention of any involvement by the news station.

A happy ending. A happy 90-year-old!

Until the news station and 7 On Your Side team started their investigation, Rosenberg wasn’t confident he’d ever get this life savings back. “I thank Channel 7 for doing that, for everything. I feel much better. I’m able to sleep!”
