What Is An IP Lookup?

An IP lookup is a query that retrieves publicly available information associated with a specific IP address. When you run one, you’re asking a database to return details tied to that address, such as its approximate geographic location, the organization or internet service provider that owns it, and its hostname.

IP lookups are commonly used to understand where web traffic is coming from, investigate suspicious activity, or verify the origin of a connection. Network administrators, security teams, and everyday users all rely on them for different purposes.

The information returned by an IP lookup comes from regional internet registries and other public data sources. It typically includes the city, region, and country associated with the address, along with the ISP or organization registered to it. Location data is approximate and reflects the registered location of the IP, not necessarily the physical location of the user.

IP lookups do not require any special access. Most are available through free online tools.
